Hedgie Proofing Your House

Unlike rodents, hedgehogs do not constantly need to chew. That makes it okay to leave a wire out on the floor, or to have something plastic or paper that a hamster or gerbil would chew on. In fact, leaving things out can make a fun obstacle course for your hedgehog. They can climb in and on anything you give them, as long as it is low enough. Shoebox, tissue box, cardboard box; just use your imagination.

1. The first step of hedgie proofing your house is choosing a room to put your hedgehog's cage. Make sure the room gets at least 12 hours of light a day (natural or artificial) and remains above 74ºF. (See Temperature) Also make sure that the room has a low level of activity during the day. Being that hedgehogs are nocturnal, it is best if they are in a quiet room, such as a bedroom, verses a room that gets constant use such as a kitchen or living room.

2. The second step of hedgie proofing is to pretend you're a hedgehog. It sounds strange, but you need to do it. Get on the ground and see if there are any places your hedgehog could get into. A hole in the wall, a hole in the couch, a space behind the TV. Anywhere that would be dangerous or where you couldn't get to your hedgehog. Also make sure that there aren't any sharp edges, loose strings, or something else they could get hurt on.

3. The third step of hedgie proofing is to fix the problems you found in step two. Block off any holes in the wall or spaces that a hedgehog could get stuck in. Pick up anything that could be potentially dangerous to your hedgehog. Close the door(s) and re-check to make sure the hedgehog can not get anywhere that you can't.

4. The fourth and last step to hedgie proofing is to put down toys for your hedgehog. At first you may just want to let your hedgehog explore without toys (but make sure it has somewhere to hide), but after the hedgehog is used to its room, you can put down toys. Cat/ferret balls, boxes, toilet paper tube, car, as long as it is safe. Then put your hedgehog down and let it have fun!
